Tom Daschle Withdraws Nomination

AP News reports that Tom Daschle, former House Majority leader/former Democratic Senator from South Dakota, has withdrawn his nomination to be Health and Human Services secretary.

Daschle had become the center of questions relating to past unpaid taxes and while Barack Obama stood by him, today withdrew from consideration. Obama accepted his withdrawal with sadness and regret.

Defeated for re-election in 2004, Daschle took a position as a policy adviser with a lobbying firm and served as a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress
