“Some of the men and women I work with in Congress are socialists.”
-Spencer Bachus, the top Republican on the Financial Services Committee, April 9, 2009
The terror… the HORROR…
The prospect of 17 closeted socialists–conspiring to subvert Congress, as described by Rep. Spencer Bachus (R-AL) in Trussville, Ala. on Apr. 9 –appears to be total fantasy.
Bachus made a big media splash with his inflammatory claim. But since his allegation, he has named only one, Bernie Sanders (I-VT), an Independent who openly claims to be a “Democratic Socialist”.
Sanders, along with reporters and lawmakers, have pressed Bachus to verify his claim by naming the other 16, to no avail. “I think at the very least he has to tell people what his definition of socialism is,” said Sanders. “And I think he should tell us who he was referring to, who’s on the list.”
In a Joe McCarthy-like response, Bachus insists to guard his list as a secret. Despite repeated requests, his office refuses to comment or respond in any way.
