What do you call a health insurance company that deliberately “deep-sixes” sick policy holders and intentionally confuses others to limit claims and maximize profits?
You may call it YOURS.
In a story that like so many others of import gained little notice among TV news organizations who late last week abandoned reporting NEWS to air wall-to-wall “King of Pop” updates (that said absolutely nothing) and to deify the unfortunately deceased “Thriller” in a rabid pursuit of ratings, former Cigna senior executive Wendell Potter appeared at a recent hearing on health insurance held by the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation. Speaking of his former employers, according to ABC News, he told members:
“[T]hey confuse their customers and dump the sick, all so they can satisfy their Wall Street investors…
With over 20 years in Public Relations for Cigna and Humana, Potter stated that it’s SOP for such large insurers to drop policyholders known to have serious conditions, for no other reason than to evade responsibility for paying the cost of promised care, simply to meet “Wall Street’s relentless profit expectations,’”
“They look carefully to see if a sick policyholder may have omitted a minor illness, a pre-existing condition, when applying for coverage, and then they use that as justification to cancel the policy, even if the enrollee has never missed a premium payment…(D)umping a small number of enrollees can have a big effect on the bottom line,” said Potter.
Oh, and another thing you can call such companies and those who run them? CROOKS! Welcome to private healthcare in the good old U S of A. Of course, this kind of thing only matters if you’ve paid out the ass for ever rising coverage on continually shrinking benefits with astronomical deductibles and myriad exclusions. If you don’t expensive, BAD insurance there are three possibilities: 1) You’re wealthy enough to have “gold card” healthcare, 2) You’re poor/lucky enough to qualify Care Medicaid or a similar plan or 3) You have no insurance.
They have no conscience, no morals, no values. They practice blind, unbridled commerce devoid of any interest in their product (healthcare) or their customers (policy holders). Their exclusive interest is achieving massive profits by any means necessary. They don’t value life, health or service, just fat salaries and bonuses earned by restricting payouts.
Top Healthcare exec pay is here. These are the same rat bastards that write arcane language into the very policies that make cancellation a cinch even when policy-holders meet every obvious requirement, just because said policy-holder is sick/dying and costing them money they promised to pay. These pricks are more than crooks. They’re murderers.
