Lebanon, PA: According to the AP and SF Gate, com yesterday, a pistol-packing soccer mom and her husband were found dead in an apparent murder-suicide. Melanie Hain, who rose to national attention by showing up at her 5 year-old daughter’s soccer game openly “packing heat” and husband Scott were found shot dead yesterday at their home. The couple’s offspring, who were present but unhurt during the incident, are reportedly staying with friends and relatives.
On Sept. 11, 2008, Hain had upset spectators at a children’s soccer match in when she showed up sporting a loaded, holstered handgun.
When County sheriff, Michael DeLeo, subsequently revoked her gun-carrying permit, Hain appealed. Her permit was reinstated despite reservations of a judge who questioned her motives given the venue and its affect on other attendees.
She said that because of his actions her baby-sitting service had suffered, her children had been harassed and she had been ostracized by her neighbors in Lebanon, which has about 25,000 residents.DeLeo said at Hain’s appeal that he revoked her permit after fielding the parents’ complaints. He said he based his decision on a state law that prohibits certain gun permits from being given to anyone whose character and reputation make him or her a danger to public safety.
The Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence offered to defend him for free.
It is a case that calls out for common sense,” Brady Center attorney Daniel Vice said then. “It’s ridiculous to bring a gun to a child’s soccer game.”
