Friday Night Concert Clip: Clark Terry, “Mumbles,” etc.

I love rock music. Raised on symphonic, classical and big band, my musical rebellion was fueled by rock. Like most of my generation, upon reaching my teens, I eschewed “serious” music for the sorcery of simpler composition; loud, amplified guitars, … Continue reading

Friday Night Concert Clip-NOT (With The Real Tuesday Weld)

It’s no secret that commercial producers like to use catchy tunes/jingles in TV spots and a recent car commercial features a song by an assemblage of Brit musicians and creatives called The Real Tuesday Weld. Continue reading

Let NPR Support Itself

Okay, enough is enough.  Today right wing blow-holes like Eric Cantor are bloviating about how their felonious ambush faux journalist James O’Keefe brought down another so-called bastion of the liberal media, PBS as Vivian Schiller, former President and CEO of … Continue reading

Nature’s Way of Telling Us (We’re Assholes)

One of my all-time favorites of the period was Spirit, a west-coast band of formidable talent and creativity. Spirit had a decent following, but never matched the financial success of many contemporaries, despite writing some of the decades’ most memorable songs. Today, as I watched the oozing crude billow menacingly in the Gulf Coast, I recalled an old saw by Spirit that’s no less pertinent today than the year it was released. Continue reading

Muse-“Uprising”

Listening to XM/Sirius “Alternative Nation” this afternoon, I heard “Uprising,” by Muse.  Now, this isn’t what I typically listen to but its deep, infections pop hooks, solid, driving tempo, 80’s retro groove and Blondie lift found me shouting the chorus … Continue reading

Friday Night Concert Clip: Peter Gabriel, “Solsbury Hill”

To the uninitiated, Peter Gabriel could be somewhat intimidating, apparently dropped from another planet. His stage presence was carefully crafted and painstakingly performed. Critics claimed that it distracted from the music, which most agreed was top-notch. Continue reading

Friday Night Concert Clip: Tower of Power feat. Carlos Santana

Ever since I first heard Tower of Power, I was drawn to them.  Their red-hot chops, superb vocals and up-tempo crossover jazz-funk makes toes tap and asses wiggle, even among those not prone to do either.  Through decades, they’ve weathered … Continue reading

Tal Wilkenfeld – The River of Life

I’ve been sleeping under a rock.  I so enjoyed HBO’s  Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Anniversary show that I watched it several times.  One of the reasons was Jeff Beck’s performances, which featured an exceptionally talented bassist,  Tal Wilkenfeld.  … Continue reading

Friday Night Concert Clip: Martin Sexton

Martin Sexton is truly an independent artist. Having become disgruntled with his original contracts, he started his own label. Rich by no means, Sexton works when he wants to and makes enough to keep going. His is a true passion for what he does and it shows. Continue reading

Friday Night Concert Clip:Teddy Pendergrass

In the late 70s, Teddy left the “Notes” to embark on a successful solo career, in which he morphed into a steamy, sex-charged love balladeer with wide appeal, including women of all ages. In 1981, he had a car crash that left him paralyzed. Many thought that he’d never perform again but a force of nature, Pendergrass proved them wrong, performing through the 90’s. Continue reading
